Weekly Update – August 14th – Mosquito Numbers Stay Low Throughout the District
August 21, 2023Weekly Update – August 28th – Dry Weather Keeps Mosquito Numbers Low
September 6, 2023There are thousands of roadside catch basins throughout the Twin Cities, with many designed to hold water and catch debris that would otherwise end up in rivers, lakes, and streams. However, this standing water often becomes ideal habitat for container-breeding mosquitoes that fly in to lay eggs where it's dark, murky, and undisturbed.
For years MMCD has employed a catch-basin crew that works throughout St. Paul, where catch basins create particularly ideal mosquito habitat. Andrew Cleland, the 2023 Catch Basin Crew Chief explains the process of monitoring and treating these sites in the above video.
Each of MMCD's field office also employs methods to control mosquito breeding in catch basins utilizing bikes, ATVs, trucks, and other methods.
