SAINT PAUL, MN — In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance mosquito control efforts, the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) is proud to announce the deployment of "Laser Loons"—Minnesota's state bird equipped with precision laser technology to target and eliminate adult mosquitoes.
This innovative program aligns with MMCD's mission to promote health and well-being by protecting the public from disease and annoyance caused by mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks in an environmentally sensitive manner.
Environmental Stewardship at the Forefront
MMCD has a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring that mosquito control methods are effective while minimizing impacts on non-target species such as dragonflies, butterflies, bees, and frogs. The "Laser Loons" initiative exemplifies this dedication by utilizing targeted technology that specifically addresses mosquito populations without disrupting the broader ecosystem.
“We had a few close calls with a Black Lab and a house cat, but after we lowered the power of the laser, the loons shifted their focus back to mosquitoes” said District Entomologist Diann Crane.
A Collaborative Effort
The development of the "Laser Loons" program is the result of extensive research and collaboration with environmental agencies and ornithological experts to ensure the safety and well-being of the loons involved.
While not yet permitted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Executive Director Daniel Huff states “permitting is always easy peasy, equipping birds with weapons, I mean what could go wrong”.
MMCD's Integrated Pest Management program relies on environmental and technical information such as monitoring and evaluation, with surveillance, data management, equipment calibration, and efficacy testing being essential to direct control activities, monitor success, and develop public information.
Looking Ahead
As MMCD continues to explore innovative solutions for mosquito control, the "Laser Loons" program represents a significant step forward. Residents can look forward to enjoying outdoor activities with reduced mosquito interference, thanks to this pioneering approach.
T-shirts depicting artist Kathy Beadle’s rendering of the laser loons in action will be available to win at select public events later this summer.

April Fools!
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!!
Let me know when you can start sending the loons to Michigan. I have a private lake I’d like to use them on. What a great experiment! What is it about adult male mosquitos that makes them a good target? Do they lay the eggs on the water surfaces? Why aren’t you aiming at those egg-laying breeders??
