MMCD Launches “LarvalCam” – A Mesmerizing New Look at Minnesota’s Most Misunderstood Residents
Early viewers describe it as “strangely calming” and “surprisingly wriggly”
St. Paul, MN — Inspired by the success of popular wildlife livestreams like the Minnesota DNR’s EagleCam, the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) today announced the launch of its newest public engagement initiative: LarvalCam—a 24/7 livestream dedicated entirely to mosquito larvae.
Broadcasting from a temperature controlled container in a location in St. Paul, LarvalCam offers an unprecedented window into the early life stages of mosquitoes. Viewers can watch in real time as larvae develop, feed, and gently drift in what staff are describing as “nature’s tiniest underwater ballet.”
Early test audiences have reported unexpectedly strong reactions.
“We had people tuning in for hours,” said MMCD spokesperson Alex Carlson. “Some said it was more relaxing than a crackling fireplace video. Others said they now check on the larvae before bed, just to see how they’re doing.”
District Assistant Entomologist Mir Bear-Johnson is among the project’s most enthusiastic supporters.
“I absolutely love watching baby mosquitoes grow,” said Bear-Johnson. “There’s a certain magic to it—the rhythmic movement, the transformation, the anticipation. And then, at just the right moment, knowing we’re going to eliminate them before they ever get the chance to fly—it really completes the experience.”
LarvalCam will also feature occasional “special events,” including:
- Feeding Frenzy Fridays
- Pupa Watch Weekends
- And the highly anticipated “Will They Make It?” treatment countdown segments
Field Operations staff say the camera highlights the importance of early, environmentally responsible intervention.
“I’ll admit, I watch it and think about how satisfying it is to destroy them before they hatch,” said Kathy Beadle, Field Operations Supervisor and Lord of the Rings Fan. She loves to shout “You shall not pass (into adulthood)!”. As she spreads environmentally friendly material that specifically targets mosquito larvae while leaving other insects, frogs and birds alone.
MMCD officials note that while LarvalCam provides an engaging and educational experience, it also underscores a critical message: the best mosquito is the one that never becomes an adult.
In a unique interactive feature, viewers can name their favorite larvae—though MMCD gently reminds participants not to become too attached.
